Committed Smithsonian supporters Bonnie and Jere Broh-Kahn are intentional about their giving, passionate about learning, and committed to providing wonder for future generations.

For more than 60 years, Bonnie and Jere Broh-Kahn have shared a life of adventure, discovery and generosity that has touched many lives.

“When I first came to Washington in 1954, it was overwhelming to a small-town girl,” recalled Bonnie, who was then training for the U.S. Foreign Service. “But the Smithsonian museums were free and open. I always felt welcome.” Jere, whom she married when they were both posted with the State Department in Bangkok, concurred, “It is education that is accessible to all.”

Broadening access to knowledge is important to the Broh-Kahns, as evidenced by their recent legacy gifts to establish Broh-Kahn Weil Directors of Education at both the National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum. The Weil name comes from his maternal grandfather, who emigrated from Alsace to settle farms in Kentucky.

“Jere always says that if we do not learn something, it is not worth the trip,” said Bonnie, who appreciates that their first named gift reflects their shared interest in wildlife and the evolution of humankind. Their decision to endow a second position was based on Jere’s service in the Air Force.

In addition, they have made significant planned gifts to support educational programming at the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Museum of American History. “We need to teach about the past and learn from it,” Jere asserted.

“Our plan is to die paupers,” quipped Jere. “After providing for our children and grandchildren, we want to give it all away before we pass away and see the initial impact of these gifts.” They also annually contribute to 13 Smithsonian museums and research centers.

“We realize through travel and museum visits that the world is full of differences,” concluded Jere, “and we are better for it.” Through their generosity, the Broh-Kahns are ensuring that generations of Americans are exposed to new ideas, experience new places, and expand their understanding of our shared history.
