Tom and Mary Evelyn Tielking’s support of the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives will impact many, now and in the future.

“We have always been museum people,” said Mary Evelyn Tielking, who once accompanied her husband Tom on a grant trip to Washington, D.C. with their young children. They explored nearly all the museums on the National Mall. “Everyone can go to the Smithsonian and add to one’s education and be entertained.”

“I appreciate that the Smithsonian museums are free and have always been that way,” said Tom. “Americans need to know our history. The Smithsonian explains its significance and fills in the gaps with accessible collections.” He emphasized the importance of updated exhibitions that bring complex ideas to life and amplify underrepresented voices. “We want people who visit to see the best parts of America,” agreed Mary Evelyn.

The Tielkings have been longtime members of the Smithsonian. When they created their estate plan, the Smithsonian was one of the first organizations on their beneficiary list. “The longevity of the Smithsonian was important in our decision-making,” said Tom. “I am confident that the institution will use our gift where it is most needed.”

A portion of their bequest specifically supports the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. “Books and libraries have always been a big part of my life,” said Mary Evelyn, who once traveled with Smithsonian Journeys to the University of Oxford for a weeklong course at the Bodleian. “I love that the Libraries are not just for show—they are used by researchers.”

Through their bequest, the Tielkings are ensuring that future generations will continue to be informed by our shared history and are inspired to make their own mark.
